Monuments of India: Kohima War Cemetery, Nagaland
In the hills of Nagaland is the Kohima War Cemetery - a quiet tribute honoring the brave soldiers who fought and fell during the Battle of Kohima during WWII. Known as the "Stalingrad of the East," this fierce battle lasted from April 4 to June 22, 1944, and marked a turning point in the war in Southeast Asia. Allied forces including British, Indian, Gurkha, and Naga troops, faced off against the Japanese in a battle to halt their advance into India.
Today, at the Kohima War Cemetery, the gravestones stand as equal tributes, transcending caste and religion. Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, and individuals of all faiths and backgrounds are laid to rest side by side, symbolising unity in sacrifice.
How to reach: 63 km from Dimapur airport
