Monsoon getaway: Mallalli waterfalls, Coorg

With its misty hills and emerald landscapes, Coorg or Kodagu in Karnataka is the Scotland of India. There’s quite a lot to discover here – from waterfalls to coffee plantations, national parks, temples and a Buddhist monastery. A hidden gem in the region is the Mallalli waterfalls – one of the most beautiful sights you will see in the heart of Karnataka. Located at the foothills of the Pushpagiri in the Western Ghats in Coorg, Mallalli Falls is absolutely awe-inspiring. A gorgeous waterfall originates where the River Kumaradhara takes a 200-feet plunge, turning into a towering water-wall. Following its natural course then, it merges into the Arabian Sea.

Besides the beautiful picture it paints adding to the natural beauty of Coorg, its location in the mountain ranges makes it a perfect place for the adventurous. Trekking is among the many popular things to do in Coorg for tourists. And the three hour trek to Mallalli Falls rewards you with serene forest views. The best season to enjoy the roaring sound and view of the waterfalls is monsoons, when the rainfall is intense and the water levels are high, turning the the surroundings into a lush carpet of green.

Getting here

The falls are situated 25 km from Somwarpet, 42 km from Kushalnagar, 70 km from Madikeri and 90 km from Virajpet. A private cab from any of these places will easily reach you to Mallalli Falls. The drive from Madikeri and Virajpet especially offer a stunning view of the surroundings, making the journey a special experience. There are buses that can take you to Hanchinalli, which is the nearest village to Mallali Falls.

Carry your cameras along – the place is an absolute treat for photography lovers. Urbanisation hasn’t hit the region yet. So there are hardly any shops or restaurants nearby. I’d recommend for you to carry your own food and water when visiting the place. Also carry a bag  for the waste. Be considerate and don’t litter the place 🙂

The rooms are spacious with all creature comforts like in-house restaurant and swimming pool. They also have a variety of fun and leisure activities such as nature walks, indoor and outdoor games, wellness and spa and cooking classes, so there’s plenty to do within the resort too. You can visit their website to read some of the Club Mahindra reviews; and consider a membership, it’s worth the investment.
